Weather in the Classroom

Some fun news today from Erin Hodne and Tim Buckley! Erin writes:

Tim Buckley helped me out in my 5th grade classroom for a weather report! I help teach a 5th grade class of 28 students and before Christmas break, we were concluding our Weather Segment (including making their own weather reports) and I thought it would be cool if I got in touch with Tim to see if he could help us out. He was so great to take the time out of his busy schedule to Skype with the class!! We watched one of his presentations then all the students got to see and hear him speak about what a Weatherman does. They got to ask questions and comment on his job. It was awesome! First time in our school history that we Skyped for a lesson. Tim was amazing and spoke with us for 45 minutes. The kids loved it and all the other classes were jealous :)

From Dr. Bill: That’s our Tim! and our Erin too! Very cool use of today’s technology.

  2. Christine says:

From Mike Cassidy: I was thinking about doing this just recently, especially with the winter weather storms, and showing how difficult it truly is to forecast accurately – meteorologists often get a bum-rap, ask anyone, they’re happy to tell you.
Well done Erin – Tim, I’ll be in touch!

  3. Christine says:

From Mike Cassidy: BTW, Tim – what’s the call for Southeastern PA and Shokan on the Tuesday/Wednesday storm? I have a bet with another teacher – I’ll give you half!

  4. Christine says:

From Tim Buckley: Mike – Haven’t looked at it super closely for up there since we’ve been swamped with the storm here, but looks like 6-8″ are a good bet for the Philly area heading into this storm tomorrow. I’d be concerned about 8-10″ for Shokan. We’ve seen as much as 5-8″ here in Wilmington, NC with about .1-.2″ of solid ice on top of that.

Needless to say, we’re shut down, with wall-to-wall weather coverage!

  5. Christine says:

From Kelly McMahon:That’s too cool!! Molly had a teacher who skyped and cotaught w/ a teacher from Australia. New technology is amazing!!

Commenting is fun! Let's hear it.
